THEATER AS POETRY
(for The American Poetry Theater
and for Amiri Baraka)

Sometimes it's hard for me to
express how excited I am about this theater.
And about working with you.
Make this theater a place
to express your wisdom!
Everything you know about life
by this time in your lives.
Don't be afraid to say it and to
say it loud and clear.
Don't worry about form
or theater conventions.
Don't worry about anything!
We're going to create new forms
to express our new thoughts!
New feelings!
New ideas!!
We are much more than a political theater.
You know I've been struggling about and
against this notion. I've been struggling
to articulate THE FREEDOM we want
to BE.
Yes, political.
And yes always the Blues.
But also the CELEBRATION!!
And our love, for one another as
a company, for our audiences who are seeking
something as we are seeking, hurting the same
hurt we hurt. Angry the same way we are
angry.
But so much more than anger.
We want a kind of deliverance.
A kind of salvation.
We want more than answers.
We want questions!
Let this theater be your very most
honest questions.
